Oceania Open Junior Championships (OOJC)

Tournament Referee, Pat O’ Rourke, writes that:

” The OOJC  is a Grade 5 events and most of the players  that played the previous week in the SPOJC stayed on with a few new ones joining.

Mann Shah (IND) and Carol Lee (NMI) were again the top seeds, reached the final and won their respective titles for a second week. Shah was tested more in the early rounds and struggled past Kelvin Du (AUS) in three sets in the quarterfinals. In the final he was too good for wildcard Gaku Moriya (JPN) 6-1 6-2. Carol Lee won her second singles title in a row but had to fight very hard against diminutive Japanese 14 year old Kanami Hayashige. Hayashige led 5-0 in the first set before Lee reeled off 7 straight games to take the set and in the second Hayashige had a game point for a 5-3 lead but couldn’t convert and Lee went on to win 7-5 6-4.

Surprise finalists Bryce Robinson and Junyi Tang from Australia upset top seeds Shah and Zaveri in the boys doubles final showing great combination to win 61 46 (10-5). Wing Ka Lin (HKG) won her second doubles title in a row but this time in combination with Carol Lee. The top seeds beat third seeds Patricia Apisah (PNG) and Helena Spiridis (AUS) 6-4 6-3.”
