Referee, Pat O’ Rourke, writes that “ the 2016 tournament returned to its calendar position directly after the South Pacific Open G4 event and, as a consequence, enjoyed almost the same field as the G4 event, making it one of the tougher grade 5 tournament in Oceania.
The top seeds from the previous event were dominant once again. Kaitlin Staines(AUS) went through without dropping a set to claim the title for the second week. This time she cruised past last week’s finalist Sara Tsukamoto(JPN) in the semis and faced Carol Lee(NMI) in the final. Lee began strongly racing to a 4-2 lead but after that it was all Staines as she won six games in a row to take the set 6-4 and then rolled her much younger opponent 6-1 in the second.
With the withdrawal of Australian Dimitri Morigiannis due to injury the boy’s singles served up a new finalist to challenge Yu Hsiou Hsu of Chinese Taipei. Ali Mooraj of Pakistan had played very well to reach the final but faced a blitz from Hsu in the first set before recovering to play a competitive second set. However Hsu made it two titles in a row winning 6-0 6-4.
Kaitlin Staines(AUS) and Claudia Ng(HKG) made it two in a row in the girls doubles defeating New Zealand youngsters Holly Stewart and Ivy McLean 6-2 6-3.
The only upset final came in the boys doubles where the top seeds, Arthur Chau(HKG)/Yu Hsiou Hsu(TPE) were toppled by fifth sees Tian Yi Hu(CHN)/ Sheng Tang(CHN) 6-4 6-4.”
