The Referee for the Oceania Closed junior Championships, Pat O’Rourke, writes that “Australia dominated the 2014 Oceania Closed Championships both in winning titles and in number of participants. With New Zealand, New Caledonia and the Pacific nations all falling short of taking all their allocated places in this year’s competition Australia filled most of the gaps except for four late withdrawals from the girls singles.
On the court Australia won both the boys and girls singles titles. There were a number of upsets in the boys singles with neither of the top two seeds making it through to the final. Max Purcell (AUS) beat compatriot Daniel Nolan in a closely fought match saving set points in both sets before winning 76 (6) 76 (5).
The girls final featured the top two seeds from Australia Naiktha Bains and Sara Tomic. In an extremely hard hitting match Tomic managed to hold serve more often and took the title with a 64 63 victory. The pair then combined to defend their doubles title from 2013 claiming a straight sets win over Rosie Cheng (NZL) and her Australian partner Maddison Inglis 64 75.
New Zealander William Matheson took a share of the boys doubles title with Brian Tran (AUS) to give New Zealand its only success at this year’s tournament. They were too strong for surprise finalists Kody Pearson and Lucas Vuradin (AUS) winning 64 63. Matheson defended his doubles title after winning in 2013 with Olly Sadler (NZL).
Last year the mixed doubles was cancelled due to inclement weather but this year the weather was fantastic for tennis all week. 12 pairs contested the mixed doubles with Australians Benard Nkomba and Kayla Mcphee upsetting top seeds Mitchell Harper and Alicia Smith in the final.
