The medal winners have been decided in the Men’s and Women’s Teams Event in the 15th Pacific Games in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.
In the Gold Medal match between New Caledonia and Vanuatu Julien Delaplane, the #2 player got New Caledonia off to a good start by winning the first rubber against Aymeric Mara (VAN) 6-2,6-4.
Then Nikolas N’Godrela (NC) had to fight off a determined Cyril Jacobe (VAN) in the 2nd set before eventually prevailing 6-2, 7-6(1) to give the win the Gold Medal with Vanuatu taking the Silver with an unassailable 2-0 win.
In the play off for the Bronze Medal the Tahitians overcame a very determined Papua New Guinea team to win 2-0. In the opening rubber the #2 player from Tahiti, Angelo Yersin defeated Matthew Stubbings(PNG) 6-4, 6-3 before the #1 player from Tahiti, Heve Kelly, ensured that Tahiti would win the Bronze Medal by defeating Mark Gibbons(PNG) 6-7, 6-1, 6-1
In the Women’s Teams Event the Team from Papua New Guinea were clinical in defeating a spirited team from New Caledonia 2-0 to take the Gold Medal. In the opening #2 singles Violet Apisah (PNG) defeated Yaelle Honakoko (NC) 6-2, 7-5
leaving Abigail Tere-Apisah (PNG) to ensure the Gold Medal for Papua New Guinea by defeating her #1 opponent from New Caledonia, Anaeve Pain 7-5, 6-2.
In the play off for the Bronze Medal the Tahitian Women beat Fiji 2-1 with the #2 Tahitian Singles player Mayka Zima defeating Ruby Coffin (FIJI) 6-2, 6-0.
Annie Shannon (FIJI) then levelled the Tie 1-1 by defeating her opposing #1 player from Tahiti, Ravahere Rauzy, 6-3, 6-2
before Tahiti won the deciding doubles to win the Bronze Medal with the team of Mayka Zima/Ravahere Rauzy defeating Ruby Coffin/Annie Shannon 6-1, 6-2
